Will you have a letter written to the Principal of King's College, quoting par. 2 of this despatch & embodying Professor Simpson's letter attached; I ask whether it would be possible to keep his professorship open for him for the further period. Ask for an early answer as he would leave Hongkong on the 17th Feb at once.

S 39143 M 42516 01 No. 13.

Sir,

Government House, Hongkong, 14th January, 1902.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 390 of the 29th November last and to inform you that Professor Simpson arrived in this Colony on the 5th instant.

2. It is much to be regretted that Dr. Simpson cannot remain in Hongkong throughout the ensuing Summer, especially as his advice and experience will not be available at the time when the plague may be expected to be at its worst, but it is possible that, as suggested by you, even a short visit may be productive of good.

3. I am glad to note that the arrival of the Bacteriologist referred to in paragraph 4 of your Despatch under acknowledgment and also in your Despatch No. 410 of the 6th ultimo, may shortly be expected.

I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient humble servant,

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P., etc.

Major-General, Administering the Government.
